1/6Recording & Production
This album was recorded at Phoenix Studios in Budapest, Hungary, over three days in July 2009.
Interpretation
The album features arrangements of violin works for viola, including Frederick Delius's Third Violin Sonata, arranged by the celebrated violist Lionel Tertis.
Composition History
Frederick Delius's Third Violin Sonata was dictated to his amanuensis, Eric Fenby, during the winter of 1929-30, as Delius was almost completely paralysed and blind.
Critical Reception
For three decades after his death, Frank Bridge was primarily remembered as a composer of teaching pieces and as Benjamin Britten's teacher, with his other works largely undervalued.
Composer Biography
Arthur Bliss, a composer from a wealthy Anglo-American family, was financially independent, allowing him to pursue his musical interests freely.
Instruments
Enikő Magyar, the violist on this recording, plays a Giovanni Grancino instrument from around 1700, on loan from the Royal Academy of Music, London.
