Performer Biography

The Gewandhausorchester has premiered many significant works, including Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto, Richard Wagner's Meistersinger overture, and Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto.

Recording & Production

The hymns on this album were recorded with a smaller, soloistic ensemble called Ensemble Florilegium to create a contrast with Bach's cantatas and offer an authentic sound spectrum of services during Bach's time.

Performer Biography

Johann Sebastian Bach, the composer of the cantatas on this album, served as cantor at St. Thomas for 27 years, from 1723.

Performer Biography

The Gewandhausorchester, which performs on this album, has a history spanning over 250 years, founded by Leipzig merchants in 1743.

Performer Biography

The Thomanerchor Leipzig, or St. Thomas's Boys Choir, is only half a century younger than the city of Leipzig itself, making it the city's oldest cultural institution.

Performer Biography

Georg Christoph Biller, the Thomaskantor (Cantor of St. Thomas) conducting this album, was himself a member of St. Thomas's Boys Choir and became the 16th cantor after Johann Sebastian Bach in 1992.
