Composition History

The 'Brilliant Legacy, Suite for Band' was commissioned by Harding University alumni and friends to honor Dr. G.E. Baggett's 80th birthday, who was a Professor of Music and the first Director of Bands at Harding University.

Dr. Todd Oxford, the alto saxophone soloist, has performed at prestigious venues including New York's Carnegie Hall and the Texas Ranger's Ballpark for a crowd of 30,000.

The 'Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble' was recorded by Reelsound Recording Co., with Malcolm H. Harper, Jr. as the Recording Engineer.

Composer Biography

Charles Booker, the composer, is a former staff arranger for the U.S. Army Field Band and a U.S. Army Bandmaster, having conducted bands internationally during his 21-year military career.

Performer Biography

Dr. Kevin Sanders, the tuba soloist, has performed with renowned conductors such as Kurt Masur and Lorin Maazel, and in Carnegie Hall under Charles Dutoit and Michael Tilson Thomas.

Compositional Technique

The piece 'Switchback' is based on the composer's characterization of speeding an automobile through the mountainous region of Northern Georgia, including an 'overlook' section and an 'exciting downhill dash'.
