Philip Smith joined the New York Philharmonic in 1978, served as Co-Principal for ten years, and then became Principal Trumpet from 1988 to 2014.

Philip Smith, the featured trumpeter, first learned to play the cornet from his father, cornet virtuoso Derek Smith, and recorded and toured with his father's Salvation Army New York Staff Band.

Interpretation

Philip Smith's trumpet playing is characterized by a "singing tone," influenced by his father's playing and his Christian upbringing, with his advice to young musicians being "Sing, sing!".

Philip Smith has performed with the New York Philharmonic under more than 200 conductors, including in 188 cities across 53 countries while on tour.

Upon his retirement from the New York Philharmonic in 2014, Philip Smith joined the faculty at the University of Georgia's Hugh Hodgson School of Music.
