Dmitri Shostakovich, a jury member at the 1950 Leipzig International Bach Competition where Nikolayeva won first prize, was so inspired by her playing that he composed his 24 Preludes and Fugues for her.

Tatiana Nikolayeva, the pianist on this album, was one of a select group of musicians to be inscribed twice on the Moscow Conservatoire's marble Roll of Honour, as both a pianist and a composer.

Tatiana Nikolayeva's playing on these technically demanding Tchaikovsky scores is described as having extraordinary sweep and authority, yet being entirely without vanity.

Nikolai Anosov, who conducts the Piano Concerto on this album, was the father of the renowned conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.
Recording & Production
The recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 on this album is the first complete recording of the original 1881 version, unlike earlier recordings which used Siloti's heavily edited 1897 'New Edition'.
Interpretation
These recordings demonstrate Nikolayeva's maxim that 'technique arises from musical demands'.
