Ivor Gurney's Five Preludes for piano were composed in the second half of 1919, a period of remarkable creativity for him, during which he also wrote over 40 songs and 80 poems.

Ivor Gurney's mental health issues were exacerbated by being shot in the right arm and gassed on Passchendaele Ridge while serving in World War I.

After his military discharge, Ivor Gurney re-joined the Royal College of Music in 1919, where he was taught by Ralph Vaughan Williams, another composer featured on this album.

Ivor Gurney, a composer and published war poet, suffered a serious mental breakdown towards the end of World War I, experiencing manic-depressive symptoms since around 1913.
