Performer Biography

Frederick Thurston, a prominent English clarinetist, was Principal Clarinet in the newly formed BBC Symphony Orchestra under Adrian Boult and later in the Philharmonia Orchestra when Toscanini conducted the four Brahms Symphonies.

Richard Rodney Bennett's Duo Concertante was commissioned by Nicholas Cox, the clarinet soloist on this album, and Vanessa Latarche, and premiered at the 1986 Cheltenham International Festival.

This recording of Bax's Clarinet Sonata restores the composer's original phrasing from the manuscript, differing from the published version which may have incorporated Frederick Thurston's ideas.
