Composer Biography
Niels Viggo Bentzon, a composer on this album, came from a prominent musical family, being a cousin of composer Jørgen Bentzon and great-grandson of J.P.E. Hartmann, who dominated 19th-century Danish music.
Performer Biography
Before becoming a conductor, Thomas Jensen was a cellist and played in the Danish premieres of major works by Beethoven and Mahler, and in first performances of symphonies by Nielsen and Sibelius.
Compositional Technique
Niels Viggo Bentzon developed his own compositional technique called 'metamorphosis,' which he identified as a formal staging post between variation and chain forms.
Performer Biography
Thomas Jensen, the conductor, was welcomed with applause by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra musicians when he became permanent conductor in 1957, despite suffering from progressive deafness.
