Zoltán Gárdonyi's Sonate für Tuba und Klavier, composed in 1948/1951, was only discovered in the late 1990s by his son and is given its recorded debut on this disc.
Performer Biography
Rudolf Ramming, the pianist on this album, teaches at the Würzburg Hochschule for Music in Germany and received the Culture Prize from the City of Würzburg for his active work as a soloist, chamber musician, and song accompanist.

Eugene Bozza's Concertino for Tuba was written after American tubist Harvey Phillips sent Bozza a recording of his Sonatine, with Bozza so impressed by Phillips' tuba performance that he composed a new work for him.

Gárdonyi's Sonate für Tuba und Klavier, composed in 1948/1951, now holds the role of the first serious sonata-type composition for tuba and piano, predating a similar work by his mentor Paul Hindemith.
Performer Biography
Skip Gray, the tuba soloist on this album, has served as Principal Tuba with the Lexington Philharmonic since 1980 and was President of the International Tuba-Euphonium Association from 2001 to 2003.

Interpretation
The Capuzzi Concerto for Double Bass is performed on this disc in a transposed edition by Francis Baines, moving it from D major to B-flat major, and includes all three movements to align with Capuzzi's original intentions.
