The album's performer, Amanda McCandless, was inspired to record this volume of unaccompanied works by women composers due to the scarcity of reference recordings for many wonderful pieces.

The cover art, created by Megan Roethler, is an interpretation of the 'double-edged sword that is womanhood,' drawing inspiration from childhood photos and mark-making to convey both strength and burden.

The album was recorded in the recording studio of the University of Northern Iowa School of Music from July 1-3, 2019.
