Giuseppe Valentini, the composer of these concertos, was a violinist in Arcangelo Corelli's orchestra and was well-known in Rome for his compositions and virtuosity.
Critical Reception
It is said that when Corelli returned to Rome after a stay in Naples, he did not receive a triumphal welcome because Valentini had become so admired, which supposedly made Corelli ill to the point of death.

Composition History
This recording of Valentini's Concerti Grossi, Op. 7, came about because Chiara Banchini's student, David Plantier, prepared an edition of the concertos as his graduation dissertation at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Chiara Banchini plays a very fine violin made in 1684 by Nicola Amati in Cremona.
Interpretation
The performers on this album worked extensively on improvisation, with each soloist developing a personal and convincing approach, which is considered very important for these concertos.
Performer Biography
Chiara Banchini, the director of Ensemble 415, often chose her concert programs to feature solo parts that could be performed by her gifted former students from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
