Composition History
The verses of "Veni, veni Emmanuel" are based on ancient plainchant settings known as the Great 'O' Antiphons, traditionally sung before the Magnificat at Vespers in the days leading up to Christmas.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Each of the Great 'O' Antiphons recognizes a facet of Christ's character, with words primarily drawn from Scripture, and is preceded by an 'O' often interpreted as a longing sigh for Christ's coming.
