1/6Composition History
Verdi composed Il Corsaro in Paris during the winter of 1847-48, fulfilling the last contractual obligation to his Milanese publisher Lucca.
Composition History
Verdi set the libretto of Il Corsaro to music from beginning to end with virtually no changes, a departure from his usual practice of demanding endless modifications from his librettists.
Critical Reception
The premiere of Il Corsaro on October 25, 1848, in Trieste was met with an extremely negative reception from both the audience and critics, leading to its withdrawal after only three performances.
Composition History
Verdi initially began working on Il Corsaro in 1845 for a potential London performance, but lost enthusiasm due to dissatisfaction with Francesco Maria Piave's libretto adaptation of Byron's poem.
Composer Biography
Verdi feigned indifference to the poor reception of Il Corsaro and never revisited the score, unlike other works he believed in, to which he would typically make changes.
Compositional Technique
Julian Budden, a Verdi monographer, noted that Il Corsaro, despite being a 'minor work,' maintained Verdi's artistic standard and has aged better than some more ambitious contemporary works.
