Fryderyk Chopin and Franz Liszt were born just eighteen months apart and both matured in Paris between 1825 and 1835.
Instruments
Chopin preferred the delicate pianos made by Camille Pleyel, son of Ignace, while Liszt favored the more robust instruments by Sébastien Erard, better suited to his 'athletic' playing style.

Liszt, as Kapellmeister in Weimar, aimed to promote 'new music' through his piano works, which included transcriptions and more liberal 'paraphrases' of operas.
