1/7Composition History
Giuseppe Verdi's librettist for the 1857 version of Simon Boccanegra, Francesco Maria Piave, based his verses on a prose draft written by Verdi himself.
Compositional Technique
The opera uses musical contrasts to reflect lighting, such as the nocturnal gloom of the Prologue versus the dazzling morning light of Act I.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Verdi was particularly interested in the confrontations between the three male characters in Simon Boccanegra, all of whom have lower voices.
Compositional Technique
The 1881 revised version of Simon Boccanegra includes a newly composed orchestral prelude that anticipates Impressionist techniques, evoking a nocturnal city by the sea in just 27 bars.
Composer Biography
Giuseppe Verdi spent every winter from 1867 onwards in a luxury apartment in Genoa, Italy, with a view of the Mediterranean Sea.
Compositional Technique
Verdi incorporated a stage direction from Antonio García Gutiérrez's Spanish drama, the source material for the opera, directly into the music, where lights on stage gradually extinguish as the Doge dies.
Composition History
The plot of Verdi's opera, Simon Boccanegra, was considered so complex that even Arrigo Boito, who revised the libretto, found it had "excess of intrigue and lack of structure."
