Pauline Viardot's mother forced her to become a singer after the accidental death of her sister, the celebrated diva Maria Malibran de Bériot, telling her: "Shut your piano! From now on, you're a singer."

This CD is the first time Pauline Viardot's sixteen compositions on poems by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and four on those by Ivan Turgenev are gathered in their original Russian version.

Pauline Viardot's connections to Russia began at birth, as her godmother was Princess Praskovia Andréïevna Chouvalova (Princess Galitzine), who hosted Pushkin in her salon.

Pauline Viardot was proficient in six languages, including Russian, which she spoke, read, and wrote fluently, as evidenced by her manuscripts and letters from 1862.

This album is the first volume of a complete collection of Pauline Viardot's 35 Russian melodies, with a second CD planned for late 2020.
