Tomás Luis de Victoria, the composer, was born in Ávila in 1548 and studied in Rome, where he became a priest and worked through a period of renewed Catholic confidence.

Interpretation
This recording of Victoria's Requiem includes the subtle addition of chamber organ and bajón (an early bassoon) to enhance the choral sound without dominating it.
Composition History
Victoria's 1605 Missa pro defunctis (Requiem) was prompted by the death of the Dowager Empress Maria of Austria, sister of Philip II, under whose aegis Victoria served.

The Sixteen often performs a 'Choral Pilgrimage' tour, bringing music back to the finest cathedrals for which it was originally written.
