This album also represents a first attempt to incorporate a significant number of other classical works from the didactic repertoire of the Orfeão dos Professores, a teachers' chorus for whom Villa-Lobos arranged music.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Heitor Villa-Lobos, a Brazilian composer, developed a personal concept of an 'orchestra of voices' in the 1930s, combining traditional vocal timbres with his own invented onomatopoeic effects.
Recording & Production
This album features the first recording of the complete set of Villa-Lobos's a cappella transcriptions of Preludes and Fugues from Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier.
Recording & Production
An important part of this project involves preparing new or first editions of the works, as many were previously only available in manuscript form.
Historical Context
The series "The Music of Brazil" is part of the "Brasil em Concerto" project by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, promoting music by Brazilian composers dating back to the 18th century.
Recording & Production
Most works recorded for this series have never had recordings available outside Brazil, and many are world premiere recordings.
Performer Biography
Valentina Peleggi, the conductor, dedicated two years to intensive research and revision of the scores to revive these nearly century-old transcriptions by Villa-Lobos.
