This recording was made in February 2016 at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin-Dahlem, using a Bartolomeo Tassini cello from 1754 and a Steinway D piano.
Composition History
The Sonata in A major by César Franck, originally for violin and piano, was approved by the composer for a cello arrangement by Jules Delsart, which transposes the violin part down an octave.
Historical Context
The French chamber music on this album grew out of two traditions: the salon culture, which valued brilliant and memorable pieces, and chamber music societies focused on Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
