The Album a Benefizio del Poeta F.M. Piave was conceived by Giuseppe Verdi to help his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave, who suffered an apoplectic stroke and faced financial difficulties.

Francesco Maria Piave, the librettist for whom the album was created, had written important librettos for all four Italian composers featured in the album, including Verdi himself.

Paolo Tosti, a pupil of Mercadante, became a singing master to Queen Margherita in Italy and later to the royal family in London, earning him money, glory, and a noble title in 1906.
