1/7Composer Biography
Georg Christoph Wagenseil, a court composer and keyboard master for Maria Theresia, was internationally renowned as both a teacher and composer; Leopold Mozart urged his son to study Wagenseil's keyboard works.
Performer Biography
Siglinde Grössinger, the flutist and conductor on this album, has performed worldwide as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestra member, covering music from Baroque to contemporary avant-garde on period instruments.
Historical Context
The 18th century was a time of great change, and the Habsburg court orchestra in Vienna was not immune, with its nearly 150 musicians performing many dramatic works.
Compositional Technique
Matthias Georg Monn, one of Vienna's most innovative composers, took the term "concertare" (to compete) literally in his concerto, having all four instruments—harpsichord, flute, violin, and bass—contend with each other.
Interpretation
The Klingekunst Ensemble, founded by Maja Mijatović and Siglinde Grössinger, focuses on lively musical communication, rooted in informed historical performance practice, and creates new concert formats like a baroque detective story.
Composition History
The flute was an unusual solo instrument in Vienna, so these concertos were quickly forgotten, making their rediscovery and first recording for this CD project particularly important.
Historical Context
Empress Maria Theresia, a gifted musician herself, was forced to make severe budget cuts in culture and the arts due to enormous sovereign debt.
