Mieczysław Weinberg, the composer, was born in revived independent Poland, merely a month after the official end of the 123-year-long period of Partitions.

This album features the world premiere recording of Weinberg's String Trio, Op. 48, in its complete four-movement version, which was first heard in 1999.
Historical Context
Despite being composed and premiered in Moscow, neither Weinberg nor the violinists who inspired his works were Russian; Weinberg was a Polish Jew, and the violinists were Ukrainian Jews.
Composition History
The Sonata for Two Violins, Op. 69, was inspired by violinist Leonid Kogan, with whom Weinberg had a musical friendship.
Compositional Technique
Weinberg's Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin, Op. 95, features a more dissonant harmony compared to his earlier works, possibly influenced by avant-garde music he heard at the Warsaw Autumn festival.
Instruments
Bartłomiej Nizioł, one of the violinists on this album, plays a 'Guarneri del Gesú' violin built in 1727.
