Walton's orchestral Variations on a Theme of Hindemith, composed in 1963, is based on the main theme of the slow movement of Hindemith's Cello Concerto of 1940, celebrating their friendship.

Both Hindemith's Cello Concerto (1940) and Walton's Cello Concerto (1955-56) were commissioned for and premiered by the celebrated cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.
