Symphony No. 12 is the longest and most wide-ranging of Weinberg's purely orchestral symphonies, subtly integrating allusions to Shostakovich, including veiled references to his D-S-C-H monogram.

Performer Biography

Vladimir Lande, the conductor, is the Principal Guest Conductor of the St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra and also maintains a successful solo and chamber music career as an oboist with the Poulenc Trio.

Weinberg's output, including 26 symphonies and 17 string quartets, is increasingly regarded as a substantial continuation of the Russian symphonic tradition.

Weinberg's Symphony No. 12, 'In memoriam D. Shostakovich,' was composed in 1976 as a response to the death of his close friend and supporter, Dmitri Shostakovich.
