1/7Album & Artwork
This album, 'When Night Falls...', is dedicated to the time after sunset, aiming to be a musical accompaniment from the world's turmoil to the stillness of the night, rather than being soporific.
Recording & Production
The recordings for this album took place in three different locations: Riga, Latvia; Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain; and Berlin, Germany, between October 2022 and February 2023.
Performer Biography
Elīna Garanča, the mezzo-soprano on this album, was influenced by the sounds of her early childhood, listening to a Latvian radio program that ushered in bedtime with bells, songs, and stories.
Album & Artwork
The album's musical journey progresses from large-scale orchestral songs to increasingly subtle, fragile, and intimate chamber music, ending with a delicate, unaccompanied solo song.
Interpretation
Elīna Garanča views the guitar as an ideal partner for her voice, noting its "wonderfully feminine, round and pleasant sound" and parallels to the mezzo voice in vibrating middle registers.
Interpretation
For Engelbert Humperdinck's 'Abendsegen' from Hänsel und Gretel, Elīna Garanča sang both parts herself via overdubbing, which she described as a "fascinating experiment."
Composer's Artistic Vision
Elīna Garanča believes that a baby in the womb perceives its mother's voice more as music than as language, and that lullabies capture this connection, radiating peace.
