The album was recorded in the main concert hall at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to give listeners a live experience rather than a studio experience.

Daniel Rowland, the performer, is an Assistant Professor of Low Brass & Instrumental Music Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and performs with the faculty chamber group Ensemble Nouveau.

This album consists entirely of new commissioned works for tuba, which Daniel Rowland, the performer, began piecing together in 2019.

The album title, Widening Circles, comes from the first piece of music Daniel Rowland, the performer, ever commissioned, which is also included on this album.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Several pieces on the album, including Metal Monday, Two Portraits of Nyx, and Data Decay, were commissioned with the specific intention of being playable by undergraduate tuba players.
