Widor's fifth and sixth Organ Symphonies were composed for the new organ in the Trocadéro Palace, built for the 1878 International Exposition in Paris.
Composer Biography
Charles-Marie Widor served as the organist at St-Sulpice for over 67 years, from 1870 until his death in 1937.
Instruments
The organ in the Abbey Church of Saint-Ouen in Rouen, built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll between 1888 and 1890, is one of the last instruments he built and has survived fully intact.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Widor's later organ symphonies, particularly the 9th and 10th, show a return to liturgical sources, especially Gregorian chant.
Performer Biography
Christian Schmitt is the 'principal organist' of the Bamberg Symphony since 2014.
