1/7Composer Biography
Dag Wirén (1905-1986) was a Swedish composer who also played a role in Swedish culture as a pianist, music critic, and board member of various associations.
Cultural Impact
Wirén's Serenade for Strings, Op. 11 (1937), is probably the most recorded Swedish piece ever and has been used as a theme tune by the BBC.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Dag Wirén stated in 1945 that he believed in "Bach, Mozart, Nielsen and absolute music," considering the symphony and chamber music the highest forms of musical expression.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Dag Wirén aimed to be a "European composer" rather than a particularly Swedish one, though much of his music developed a Scandinavian sound.
Composer Biography
The sea was vitally important to Wirén, who acquired a summer house at Björkö in the Stockholm archipelago in 1948, which became a central place for his compositional inspiration.
Composition History
Wirén's Suite miniature for cello and piano, Op. 8b, was a Christmas gift for his Irish cellist wife, Noel Franks, in 1933.
Compositional Technique
Wirén often developed his works from a few thematic and rhythmic ideas, using short musical phrases, and from 1943, he employed a 'metamorphosis technique' to continuously transform thematic material.
