Wolf composed the fifty-three songs of the Mörike-Liederbuch between February 10 and November 26, 1888, at an astounding rate, sometimes writing several songs a day.

Wolfgang Holzmair, an Austrian baritone, is particularly noted for his intelligent performances of Lieder and has taught Lied and oratorio at the Mozarteum in Salzburg since 1998.
