Composer Biography
Xiaogang Ye, born in Shanghai in 1955, is considered one of China's leading contemporary composers and holds several prominent positions, including chairman of the China Musicians Association.
Cultural Impact
Xiaogang Ye's work has gained unprecedented exposure in China, leading to him being named 'Man of China' in 2005, partly due to his compositions for over thirty Chinese movies and TV series.
Composition History
Sichuan Image, a symphonic painting, was commissioned by the Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra and comprises short, atmospheric pieces designed to accompany filmed scenes.
Instruments
The large orchestra for Sichuan Image includes parts for four percussionists and a group of traditional Chinese instruments, such as the erhu, zhonghu, pipa, di, xiao, and sheng.
Notable Performances
Xiaogang Ye's composition Starry Sky was premiered by Lang Lang during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in August 2008, and the live broadcast was watched by three billion people worldwide.
