Composition History

Soo Yeon Lyuh's piece 'Yessori' was commissioned in 2016 for the Kronos Quartet as part of their 'Fifty for the Future' project, which commissioned fifty pieces from different composers to mark the quartet's forty years.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Soo Yeon Lyuh, the South Korean composer of 'Yessori', was inspired by traditional Korean music's pitch relationships and fluid rhythmic cycles, and fell in love with a two-stringed bowed instrument called 'haegeum'.

Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No.1 in D major, Op.11, was hastily penned as a chamber work for a soirée organized by his friend Nikolai Rubinstein, a pianist and teacher, to promote Tchaikovsky's compositions.

Compositional Technique

The Andante cantabile movement of Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No.1 is inspired by a Ukrainian folk song, 'Vania was seated on the divan', which the composer heard while staying at his sister's house.
