Andrea Zani, born in 1696, received his first musical instruction from his father, Francesco, a violinist, and later studied with Giacomo Civeri and Carlo Ricci.
Compositional Technique
While all cello concertos follow the standard fast-slow-fast movement sequence, Andrea Zani was innovative in his handling of structure and thematic material, with considerable variation in movement length and ritornello treatment.
Composition History
The twelve "Concerti per Camera" by Andrea Zani were discovered by musicologist Dr. Jill Ward, who wrote her PhD thesis on Zani's works.
Recording & Production
The manuscripts for Zani's twelve "Concerti per Camera" are preserved in the Musical Library of the Counts of Schönborn in Wiesentheid, Germany, and permission was granted by the House of Schönborn for this recording.
Performer Biography
Martin Rummel, the cellist on this recording, is the last pupil of the legendary William Pleeth and is known for his first recordings of all major cello études.
Composition History
These cello concertos were written for Rudolf Franz Erwein, Graf von Schönborn, a music-loving, cello-playing nobleman who built a music collection in Wiesentheid, Germany.
