About this event
At the end of the 18th century, a ruthless viceroy and his lenient court ruled over the Spanish conquest of Peru. Will the beautiful street singer Perichole take bribes from the King to eat her fill? Will she win her lover’s respect back? Will they manage to escape from their gilded cage?
The romantic century is fascinated by courtesans. Offenbach borrows one from Mérimée who himself drew his inspiration from Peruvian history. The political onslaught turns into mockery, while the title role remarkably depicts a woman and the inalienable freedom of arts.
Opéra bouffe in three acts by Jacques Offenbach.
Libretto by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac.
Creation at the Théâtre des Variétés, 25 April 1874 (second version).
