About this event
In this masterclass, Professor Yang is accompanied by young cello student Jiyoung Noh, who will be working on Felix Mendelssohn's Cello Sonata No. 2 in D major, Op. 58, composed in late 1842, first half of 1843. Jiyoung is encouraged to explore tonalities, to be aware of changes, and to work on articulation, dynamics, and phrasing. The objective is to make the performance more convincing and expressive by taking risks and making small changes to repeated parts, professor Yang says. He also insists on better communication between the accompanying pianist and Jiyoung, who should rehearse this first movement with much emphasis on musical gestures, dynamics, and color changes while having a dialog with the piano.
What we learn:
Understanding emotions and feeling in the piece,
Defining tone and color,
Improving musicality and precision,
