Justin Taylor: 10 Years in 10 Pieces
To celebrate 10 years of IDAGIO, we’ve invited some of classical music’s most prominent artists to take part in a special series: '10 Years in 10 Pieces'. Each artist reflects on the past decade by selecting 10 key works that have shaped their artistic journey, presented in a thoughtfully curated playlist accompanied by their personal commentary. Justin Taylor, award-winning harpsichordist and Alpha Classics artist, is celebrated for his virtuosity and poetic touch. Since his breakthrough in 2015, he has performed worldwide, earned major critical accolades, and recorded acclaimed albums both as a soloist and with his prizewinning ensemble, Le Consort.

This is a pivotal year for me, the year of the release of my first album, which I dedicated to a little-known family of French composers whose music has always deeply moved me: the Forquerays. Admirable musicians with explosive personalities (the father had the son imprisoned!), their compositions reflect their extreme yet always sincere sensibility. This album brought me to the attention of music lovers and launched my career on stage.

Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 23 KV 488
The telephone rang, and I received a call asking me to replace Kristian Bezuidenhout in a Mozart concerto: that was how I discovered the fortepiano! Having played the ‘normal’ piano and the harpsichord, I had wanted to discover this instrument for a long time, and I finally had the opportunity to do so: it was a revelation.

J.S. Bach: BWV Anh. II 115 / Anh. III 183
Bach accompanies musicians from their very first notes and throughout their lives. One of the very first pieces I played when I was little.

I love chamber music, sharing music with friends. That's the whole story behind Le Consort, which we founded in 2015 – ten years ago too! – and with which we rediscovered Dandrieu by recording his sonatas for the first time.

Albéniz's effervescent energy has always deeply moved me; it's music I don't play in concert, but it's one of my favourite pieces of music.

Perhaps the harpsichord recording I've listened to the most, and the one that made me fall in love with the melodic, singing, and sensual character of the harpsichord. Its sound fascinated me so much that I wanted to play the instrument myself.

Introducing lesser-known composers is one of my passions! Together with Théotime Langlois de Swarte, we set our sights on François Francoeur and his brother Louis, whose works we recorded for the first time ever!

Vivaldi estro armonico (Vivaldi's harmonious inspiration)
The exuberance of Vivaldi combined with the complexity of Bach makes for quite an explosive cocktail... That was the idea behind my album ‘Bach & l'Italie’, which is a programme that I still perform very regularly in concert today!

William Christie has had a decisive influence on the interpretation of Baroque music and has succeeded in reconciling knowledge and emotion like few other musicians. Recording an album with him on two harpsichords was a huge inspiration, such is the contagious nature of his freedom.

This year, 10 years into my career, marks a very important milestone for me with the release of my album ‘Chopin intime’, on which I play Chopin's works on a very special model of pianino that Chopin himself owned. This recording has found success with a very wide audience and has brought period pianos to the attention of non-specialists. I am deeply happy about this, because in my opinion, the trend towards historical interpretation should not be limited to a specialist audience. These interpretations on period instruments offer a profoundly new and sincere perspective on repertoires that seem familiar and are therefore accessible to everyone!
