Composition History
Deborah Pritchard's "Wall of Water" violin concerto was inspired by and responds to Maggi Hambling's series of oil paintings, also titled "Walls of Water."
Recording & Production
This album features premiere recordings of all the works, and the composers were present during the recording sessions.
Performer Biography
Harriet Mackenzie, the violin soloist, has performed across five continents and her recordings have received international acclaim, including 'Editor's Choice' in Gramophone Magazine.
Compositional Technique
Paul Patterson's "Allusions" for two solo violins and strings uses musical characterizations of three operatic figures, including Sir John Falstaff, Don Giovanni, and characters from Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro."
Composer Biography
David Matthews, who composed "Romanza," was largely self-taught in composition and learned much from being an assistant to Benjamin Britten in the late 1960s.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Emily Doolittle's piece, "falling still," explores the difference between sounds made by living creatures, like bird songs, and sounds resulting from natural processes, such as wind or rain.
