Yegor Shevtsov, the pianist on this album, has toured with the Mark Morris Dance Group since 2008 and with American Ballet Theatre in 2011 and 2012.

This album was recorded in August and November 2012 at the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.

Pianist Yegor Shevtsov was Artist-in-residence at EMPAC in Troy, NY, during the 2012-2013 season, where he recorded the works on this disc.
Composition History
Claude Debussy's Twelve Etudes for Piano were composed in the summer of 1915, after a period of artistic paralysis caused by the First World War.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Composer Pierre Boulez compared his music to fish in an aquarium, hovering motionless before suddenly flitting like an arrow, a description also apt for Debussy's Etudes.
Compositional Technique
Pierre Boulez's piece Incises draws its pitch material from the six notes of the name SACHER (E flat, A, C, B natural, E, D), which he also used in other works like Messagesquisse and Répons.
