Performer Biography
Pius Cheung, the marimba soloist, is known as a master soloist on his instrument, and his CD of Bach's Goldberg Variations was praised by The New York Times for its 'deeply expressive interpretation'.
Instruments
The pipa, a plucked instrument of the lute family also featured on this album, was brought to China via the Silk Road over two thousand years ago and has since been assimilated into Chinese culture.
Instruments
The sheng, a Chinese mouth organ featured on this album, is considered the ancestor of all reed instruments, including the Western organ and accordion, with evidence of its use for at least 2,500 years.

Trey Lee, the cellist on this recording, was hailed as a 'miracle' by Gramophone and received a rousing standing ovation for his concerto debut at Carnegie Hall.

Bright Sheng, the composer, believes that just as there is no pure blood in any race, there is no truly nationalistic music either, drawing inspiration from the Silk Road's cultural fusions.
