Composition History
Debussy reluctantly accepted a commission for a saxophone work from American player Mrs. Richard J. Hall, which was not completed until 1908, thirteen years after it was commissioned.

The saxophone found an early place in French military bands and opera, and later became an essential element in jazz and swing bands in America.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Debussy initially found the saxophone a 'clumsy instrument' and was unsure of its character, questioning if it favored the romantic sweetness of the clarinet or the coarse irony of the sarrusophone.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded at the Concert Hall of the Belgian Radio and Television in Brussels across several days in late 1989 and late 1990.
