1/6Interpretation
For cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton, playing Bach's suites evokes the image of sculptor Giacometti's hands molding clay until a face appears.
Album & Artwork
The performer, Sonia Wieder-Atherton, dreamt of Sarah Moon's images when she first desired to record the Bach suites, associating them with the creation of the world.
Recording & Production
The final two Bach Cello Suites on this album were recorded in the church of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains in Metz, a place where the performer had previously recorded Monteverdi.
Recording & Production
Sonia Wieder-Atherton recorded the first four Bach Cello Suites at Noirlac Abbey, in the monastic refectory.
Recording & Production
This recording was made in May 2023 at Arsenal Cité Musicale-Metz and received support from the Fonds de Dotation La Petite Escalère.
Interpretation
Sonia Wieder-Atherton believes that performing Bach's suites requires digging deeply into the string to give birth to the musical phrase and ensure it breathes correctly.
