Richard Lester, a leading early keyboard musician, has been active for almost fifty years; his 1975 recording of Scarlatti sonatas was chosen as 'the favourite' on Dame Janet Baker's BBC Desert Island Discs in 1982.

The harpsichord's temperament is based on Johann Georg Neidhardt's system, which allowed for greater individuality in each key compared to equal temperament.

The harpsichord used for this recording is a double manual instrument built in 2011 by Colin Booth, based on a 1710 single-manual harpsichord by Hamburg builder Johann Christoph Fleischer.
