Bartók's First String Quartet was written in Budapest between 1908 and 1909 and premiered by the Waldbauer-Kerpely Quartet, who also premiered his Second, Third, and Fourth Quartets.
Compositional Technique
Bartók's Fifth Quartet is composed in a symmetrical 'arch' form, where the first and fifth movements share material, as do the second and fourth, with the central third movement standing alone.
