The String Trio in E-flat major, Op.3, may have originated from a request for a string quartet from Count Apponyi in 1795, which Beethoven instead developed into a grand string trio.

The three Op.9 trios were dedicated to Count Johann Georg von Browne-Camus, a Russian army officer and an idiosyncratic patron of Beethoven.

The Lendvai String Trio, formed in February 2004, consists of Nadia Wijzenbeek (Dutch violinist), Ylvali Zilliacus (Swedish violist), and Marie Macleod (British cellist).
