Ferdinand Ries, the composer, was a student of Beethoven for three years in Vienna, having known him since childhood because Ries's father taught Beethoven violin.
Performer Biography
Trio Egmont, the performing ensemble, won First Prize and the Ries Special Prize at the 2021 'Beethoven in seiner Zeit' competition for chamber music on historical instruments.
Interpretation
This recording was inspired by recent research into 19th-century historical performance practice, incorporating tempo freedom, vibrato in the style of Louis Spohr (a contemporary of Ries), and period-specific improvisation.
Instruments
The instruments used for this recording are historically appropriate, including a Conrad Graf grand piano from 1826/27 and gut-stringed violin and cello.
