This recording is dedicated to Dr. Milan Slavický (1947-2009), a composer, theorist, and musical director who was involved in the creation of most of the Guarneri Trio Prague's recordings.
Composition History
The Piano Trio in A, Op. posth., was discovered in 1924 by Dr. Ernst Bücken, a professor of music at the University of Cologne, among manuscripts from Bonn.
Notable Performances
Brahms, known for his humor, attributed the authorship of his Piano Trio No. 2 in C major, Op. 87, to Ignaz Brühl, who was playing the piano part at its private premiere in 1882.
Composer Biography
Brahms lived with the Deichmann family in Mehlem in 1853, where his immense admiration for Schumann's music was born.
Performer Biography
Čeněk Pavlík, the violinist of the Guarneri Trio Prague, plays the 'Zimbalist' violin made by Joseph Guarneri del Gesù in 1735.
Compositional Technique
The Andante con moto movement of Brahms's Piano Trio No. 2 in C major, Op. 87, demonstrates his predilection for Gypsy music, similar to his famous Hungarian Dances.
Composition History
Brahms was known to periodically destroy his youthful works, mentioning quartets and sonatas, but no trios, in letters where he spoke of 'setting fi re to youthful works'.
