Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15, was written in 1795 and revised multiple times over the next five years, making it the first of his piano concertos to be published.
Critical Reception
An 1804 review in the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung praised the performers of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 but criticized the composer for its 'chromaticism and enharmonic confusions - sometimes to the point of bizarre-ness'.
Performer Biography
Yevgeny Sudbin, the pianist on this recording, was hailed by the Daily Telegraph as 'potentially one of the greatest pianists of the 21st century' and was nominated Artist of the Year at the 2016 Gramophone Classical Music Awards.
Recording & Production
This recording was made at the Tapiola Concert Hall in Finland, with Concerto No. 1 recorded in September 2014 and Concerto No. 2 in December 2015.
Interpretation
Pianist Yevgeny Sudbin plays a 'cocktail of material' for the cadenzas in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, including some of his own, following an old tradition for this work.
