The chamber music arrangements of Beethoven's piano concertos by Vinzenz Lachner were initiated by German pianist and pedagogue Sigmund Lebert, who aimed to create playable and performable editions for his students.

This recording completes the first-ever full cycle of Beethoven's five piano concertos in chamber music arrangements by Vinzenz Lachner, with pianist Hanna Shybayeva.

Historical Context

The chamber music arrangements of concertos, like those on this album, became popular during the Biedermeier period because pianos were common in bourgeois homes, but orchestral works could not be performed there.

Compositional Technique

In his Piano Concerto No. 2, Beethoven replaced a traditional cadenza in the slow Adagio movement with a recitative using a sustained pedal, an innovative technique he later revisited.

Composition History

Franz Liszt was commissioned to arrange the orchestral part for a second piano in the student edition of Beethoven's piano concertos, which also included Vinzenz Lachner's string quintet arrangement.
