Composition History
Beethoven returned to composing piano trios in 1808 after a decade-long break, deciding on them because of a shortage of such works.
Compositional Technique
In these Op. 70 trios, Beethoven gave the string instruments equal footing with the piano, creating a rich contrapuntal interplay, unlike the keyboard-dominated trios of Mozart and Haydn.
Performer Biography
The Florestan Trio, formed in 1995, has received numerous accolades, including a Gramophone Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for chamber music.
Recording & Production
The Florestan Trio recorded the Op. 70 trios in October 2001 and the Allegretto in B flat in September 2002, both at Henry Wood Hall, London.
Notable Performances
Beethoven's new trios were first performed at the musical salons of his close friend, Countess Marie von Erdödy, to whom they were later dedicated.
