Composition History
The title of Arias and Barcarolles was inspired by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who, after a White House concert, remarked that he preferred music with a theme, "not all them arias and barcarolles."
Compositional Technique
The song cycle Arias and Barcarolles is a very personal work, with its seven songs framed by a Prelude and a postlude (Nachspiel), and each piece (except the Prelude) carrying a dedication.

All the poems in Arias and Barcarolles are by Leonard Bernstein himself, except for 'Little Smary,' attributed to his mother, and 'Oif Mayn Khas'neh,' a Yiddish poem by Yankev-Yitskhok Segal.
