Joly Braga Santos, born and died in Lisbon (1924-1988), was considered the leading Portuguese symphonist of the 20th century.

Joly Braga Santos studied violin and composition at the Conservatory in Lisbon and was a disciple of Luis de Freitas Branco, a leading Portuguese composer.

Compositional Technique
Joly Braga Santos's later works, from 1960 onwards, show influences from the post-war avant-garde, emphasizing free chromaticism and dissonant harmonies.
Performer Biography
Jan Bastiaan Neven, the cellist on this recording, was the principal cellist of the Algarve Orchestra from June 2002 to October 2003.

Joly Braga Santos composed his first four symphonies rapidly between the ages of 22 and 27.
